Grace and Beauty

110215-bewick-profile
The Bewick's swan is the smallest of the three species of swan found in the UK. A winter visitor from Arctic regions, it is stockier than than the mute swan and whooper swan. The concentration of Bewick's swans at Slimbridge was one of the drivers for Sir Peter Scott to establish his reserve there which has developed into the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust.

An Easter token for my lady followers

100404_daffodils

Daffodils are not a traditional Easter flower but I didn't have any for you on St David's Day, and they are at their
best now.

Portrait of a Red Kite

Kite_blur_post_noise_ninja

The red kite has been one of my favourite birds since childhood - not just because of its grace and beauty but also the story of its persecution and near extinction in the United Kingdom which preceeded its remarkable resurgence in numbers over the last 30 years or so.

Since my first encounter with a solitary red kite in the middle of a very wet bog in mid Wales on a rainy August morning about 25 years ago, through now routine, but never boring, sightings while travelling along the M40 through Buckinghamshire I have always thrilled to see these birds soaring on the thermals and swooping down to collect food.

Here is a portrait of a red kite rather than a photograph, as the original shot was frankly rather poor quality. Through the wonders of modern day software I think I have done justice to my spectacular friend. I hope you agree.
